===================================================

  1. Group Run on Saturday – 8 am at Haines Point RUN Location

More than 30 people RSVPing for this run – which means 40.  Fun to see the energy creeping back in!

While the forecast has been softening (see below) – we will still have an eye on the roads and sidewalks in DC and have a go or no-go decision to you by 7 am.   Look to your email, if you don’t see an email check members.triteamz.com, mailing lists, then “Coach Eds’ Communications”.  These notes post immediately – though it could take time for them to filter through email servers.

PLEASE LOOK AT THE DIRCTIONS AND CUE SHEETS BELOW.  SOMEONE ALWAYS GETS LOST FINDING US B/C THEY ASSUME THEY KNOW HAINES POINT VERY WELL.  ALSO, CHECK THE RUN CUE SHEETS SO YOU HAVE THE TIME TO SET YOUR BEARINGS FOR THE RUNS WE WILL PICK FROM IN THE MORNING.

  • When: 8:00 am
  • Where: Hains Point RUN LOCATION
  • What to bring: Dress warm for standing around before the workout starts, and after the workout ends (just in case).  Have a change of shirt/warm top and a towel in your car.  Its fun to hang out and chill for a while without freezing.  Dress to impress!
  • While we will try to coordinate routes in the parking lot – check out or print these “maps” so you can see some of the options for getting in your miles.  We will agree on a few loops to repeat to keep the crew together as best we can.  If running long – plan to make it two loops so you can fill up/eat during the run.   “Cue Sheets” Here:  Click on me
  • Please Vote to let me know if you are coming
  • If you are running or run walking 15-16 minutes per mile or slower – please email Kaila Lupo so you can coordinate the workout as a team.  WE call out this pace b/c for some reason people don’t realize that 25% of our team is this pace (they are just hiding from us)!  Kyla can be reached at KylaLupo@gmail.com

======================

  1. Party update (dress, other, parking reminder, CASH AWARD for the desert contest – $100 for each category)
  • THERE WILL BE A $100 award for the winner of each desert division (Most Sinful, and Easiest to eat on a bike ride).  If there is less than 2 people in a category – the categories will be combined for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  WE ONLY HAVE 7 ENTRIES!  Jump on please – give it shot!
  • Dress is casual – Jeans and sweatshirt or whatever…
  • Parking – Justine Dr (my street) ends (on one side) at Gallows Road.  This is about half a lap of the high school track.  Directly across Gallows is a parking center.  You can also find street parking in the neighborhood.  The world is your oyster. Try to carpool or take Uber.
  • Reminderno dogs please.  Just a bit too much for this party.
  • Weather – see below, but we are on for sure.  Too many wheels in motion.  Be safe – and take a cab if you are concerned.
  • Address: 4021 Justine Dr, Annandale Va 22003
  • Google Map: https://members.triteamz.com/locations/eds-house/

===================================================

  1. Reminder on Sunday Clinics – a few giveaways if you attend either of the clinics.

These two clinics will not happen very often.  They are both awesome clinics and will come around again – but try to get there this weekend.  Each time you attend one of these you will learn just a little more!  The Sunday Clinics include:

  • 9 am Team Z Medical Screening (Fast Track)
  • 10:30 AM Women’s Only Clinic (Fast Track)
  • There will be a few Team Z Giveaways at both clinics
  • Family and friends are welcome to the Medical Screening Clinic

Details on these clinics found here in the weekend’s original post.

================================================

  1. Weather Update

The forecast is easing up.

  • 20% chance of precip today – near 53.
  • Slight chance of rain, snow, or sleet between 9 and midnight
  • Then a 50% chance of snow or ice overnight into Saturday
  • Saturday – little or no accumulation expected
  • Saturday night – little or no accumulation is expected

With Luck – we are free and clear for both the run and the party. It looks like we should be ok, but these guys are always wrong so we’ll see.

NOTE:  We will send an email around 7 am with a go or no go decision based on “eyes on” in the district/Haines point roads and sidewalks. If you do not get an email for some reason – go to members.triteamz.com and click on “coach’s comms”.  Or go to your mailing lists and select “Coach Ed’s Communication”.

The time is 6:30 PM on Tues or Thursday, or both Tuesday and Thursday.

Important Cancellations and Updates for tonight’s (this week’s) workouts

I’ve received a bunch of holiday party, travel/out of town, etc emails.  Check out what’s in this email.  Details for each subject are below the line.

  • All Scheduled Swims for this week are on
  • Updates and cancellations for this week’s Spins
  • Updates and cancellations for this week’s Track

============================================

Today’s Swim at UDC:  The pool was closed b/c they did not have staff to open the facility.  UDC sent us a “whoops we forgot to tell you” email late last night.  We desperately want to resolve our issues with UDC because that pool is very important to our MD and DC residents (and commuters).  Note that Frank and I are very upset.  We are doing everything we can to improve the situation.  Please keep your spirits up – I believe.

================================================

Today’s Swim at Spring Hill:  I volunteered to coach for Dominic – my alarm was set for PM.  I was the missing coach on deck – so don’t take that out on Dominic or Sarah. I’ve missed 3 practices in 11 years.  2 of them were covering for Dominic in the last year.  I’m not happy about it, please accept my apology.

===========================================

All Scheduled Swims for this week are on

Christmas Weekend Workouts for Team Z – and a look ahead to next week

No group run on Saturday at PRR.  Not enough interest (almost no interest). NEW WORKOUT OPTION ON SATURDAY – PLEASE VOTE AGAIN, SAME POLL IS OPEN WITH PRR ANSWER REMOVED AND W&L (NEW) ANSWER INCLUDED.

  • Please vote again…if you are not coming that is fine – but if I don’t see a response I will probably have the few who vote come to my house for free Cervelo day. 🙂
  • [If you were following your training plans you would have noticed that Wed was a time trial on the track.  I’m betting most did not do the workout so I’d like to take advantage of the opportunity (not having a group run) to help anyone who is interested.]

Check it out, what’s up for Team Z this weekend:

  1. Saturday Evening Team Z (and others who want to come) Christmas Eve Monuments Run  at 11 PM- This is our feature workout for the weekend.  If you can only go to one – please share your holiday spirit and Join Mark and Mary (links to their profiles below)  at 11PM.  Meet at the base of the steps to Lincoln Memorial. Check the details below
  2. Saturday Morning Track and or Technique Workout- W&L High School, 9:30 AM – check the details below
  3. Look ahead for next week (no bootcamp monday, yes run monday – etc)

=================================================

1 – Team Z Christmas Eve Monuments Run

Mark and Mary are hosting their annual Xmas Eve Monuments Run.  This will be the 7th time we’ve done this and it’s been a Team Z tradition nearly as long.  All are welcome – your Mom in town for the holidays, the kids who you’re letting stay up to see in Xmas Day, your dog who needs to run off some steam, the friends you run with on the weekends.  We’ll have cue sheets for a 2-4 mile run/walk and we’ll all share in some food and drink afterwards.

The Deets:

  • What:     Seventh annual run/walk around the monuments on the Mall on Christmas Eve
  • Bring:     Hot chocolate or cookies or something nice to share with everyone.  This is National Park land, so if you spike your drink, keep it discreet.
  • When:     Meet at 11pm, Christmas Eve (Friday, December 24th).  Run starts at 11:15pm
  • Where:    Steps of the Lincoln Memorial
  • Parking:  Free and easy on Ohio Drive

The Mall at night is a truly magical place and what better way to celebrate doing what we love?  Running and eating!  See you there!

Mary & Mark (Mark and Mary are Team Zrs)

=============================================

– Christmas Eve (AM) track practice and or technique session

The interest in Saturday mornings run is pretty low.  So I’d like to take advantage of the opportunity to accomplish the following…

A) let anyone who missed the time trial on WEd to make it up. Be there at 9:30 to warm up – we’ll start the 1 mile or 3.1 mile time trial at 9:45 as a group/mass start.

B) help anyone work on running technique who is interested. I will be there (I might twist the toe of another, but either way).  If you just want to work on your running technique without loading on mileage – I’d really like the opportunity to help you with that.  I am hoping that people who I don’t get to work with very often would be able to make it.  Whether it is b/c your work hours, family commitment, or just that we live just about a moon away from you….

I’d like to keep it to an hour, or maybe a little more so please don’t be late.  Dress warmer than you would on a winter run – there will be some standing around.  So bring a balaclava, ski hat, ski gloves with hand warmers, and a super warm jacket.  You can put these on and take them off as you wish.  We will only be on the infield and or running around the track (or even just part of the track).  You can shed to cool off, but if you don’t have the clothes to put on you could be miserable.  Bring it if you have it!

The Deets:

  • What:     Time trial (or other track workout you’d like to make up), or technique session
  • Bring:     Warm clothes, gloves, pants, hats, things you can layer on and off.  I mean ski jacket too…bring it all so you are comfortable if standing around
  • When:     warm up at 9 am – time trial starts at 9:15.  Technique starts shortly thereafter
  • Where:    W&L High School
  • Parking:  Free and easy all around the school

===================================

If you swim with us on our master swim team (called, L4 Masters Swimming…or “Lane 4” Masters Swimming)….

Those of you on quarterly option – your pass will auto-renew on January 1 for the Jan – March 2017 quarter.

Remember, we are supposed to provide our registrar Lindsay two-weeks advance notice if you do not wish to renew to avoid an administrative fee.  Obviously, this reminder doesn’t quite allow the two week deadline for this next period. But if you do not plan on continuing your first quarter 2017 pass, please let Lindsay know now via email at lindsay.viellieu@gmail.com

If you would like to start swimming with us in  January, please see the guidance in number 8 below.

=======================================================================

=======================================================================

9 – Holiday Marathon Swim Opportunity – let me know if you have questions about this please

BILLY ADAMS CHALLENGE WORKOUT

The note below is from Frank Marcinkowski – one of the small crew that manages L4 Masters. The event described is something that swim teams have executed for many many years…definitely a tradition. I remember doing 90 100’s and thinking it was massive. So it creeps up on you – the workout below will = greater than 6.5 miles.

Obviously this is not a straight swim, and some people will go farther than others. Maybe you are new to freestyle and just want the challenge…see how many you can do before you call it a day. 15? 35? 90? The point is that this will be unique environment where there will be others chasing the similar goal.

From Frank, below

“We are pleased to announce that we have arranged for Lane 4’s special insanity workout to occur at AU on New Year’s Eve this year!

Starting at 1:00 PM (please be ready to start around 12:45), those of you who accept this special marathon workout challenge will embark on 117 x 100 yards. We chose 117 repititions because we are celebrating the start of a new year, as opposed to reminiscing over 2016.

For anyone who completes this workout, Frank (L4 management) will ask L4 Coaches to let you drop off 200 – 300 yards at your first workout in 2017!!

=======================================================================

10 – Swim lessons for underprivileged children – Instructors/adult oversight needed

Marymount University Swim Coach is named Mike Clark. Mike has run in our USMS/Nova Swimming circles for decades and you should trust that you are in a safe and professional charity environment. I guess I’m just saying I’d vouch for him.

Mike and Marymount University run a program to teach swimming lessons to children of low income families. The program runs every Saturday night from 5-7pm. All the instructors are volunteers. Marymount Swim Team, Clark swim club (Mike Clark’s private youth swim program), and local high school swimmers participate.

If any team z members want to help out, Mike and his volunteer staff would love to have some adult volunteer instructors.

Email me if you would like to help. CoachEd@TriTeamZ.com

=======================================================================

 11 – Shamrock Group Rental Houses – respond if you would like to get in a team house.

Our “housing coordinator” (Kim Larson Hawksworth) will organize a couple Shamrock houses if people are interested. If you would like to be included in a Team Z house for Shamrock 8k, 13.1, or 26.2…..

Please email klarson125@hotmail.com. (NOT COACH ED)

Note that Kim will be traveling Dec. 15 – 22, so if you don’t hear right back from her, that’s why.

Police have issued a request to not leave your house.

  • There have been 41 reported car accidents in Virginia.

  • Airport, all run ways shut down due to the ice.  Amazing.

I will reschedule the bike maintenance clinic – and put out/something together for the gear Q&A.

This weekend’s Poll, Please Vote: https://members.triteamz.com/polls/Saturday How to Buy a Bike or Swim Gear & How To Dress for Winter Riding and Running Clinic at Coach Ed’s – 10:00 AM

This clinic will address three main areas.  How and where to buy a bike.  What drives the cost? How do I set a budget and where do I start?  How do I know I’ve got the “right bike for me”?

We will also address how and where to buy swim gear.  Is there a difference between types of goggles?  Does it matter which ones I use?  What are the “cool kids” wearing in the pool?  How much should I spend and do I need a swim cap or other gear?

Finally I will discuss how to dress for winter riding and running.  I (me, Coach Ed) very much dislike being cold.  And I’m one of those with the white fingers, even when its 60 and sunny.  But I love riding and running outside in the winter when I’m adequately prepared.  I like it more than summer work b/c we are the only ones out there.  No pretenders.  No Sunday drivers.  Even the dogs tend to stay in the house!  Come learn the tricks for staying warm… and you likely have almost everything you need at home.  You’ll need to pick up a few things….

  • When: 10:00 am
  • Where: Coach Ed’s
  • What to bring: Just yourself!
  • I should have some coffee/hot cocoa
  • Please Vote to let me know if you are coming

===========================================

  • When: 11:15 AM
  • Where: Coach Ed’s
  • What to bring:  Your front wheel, YOUR pump, and your saddle bag/contents (Only if you have these items.  Do not go out to buy anything you are missing until you hear us discuss them)
  • I should have some coffee/hot cocoa
  • Please Vote to let me know if you are coming

No track tomorrow – Q&A on buying bikes, swim & swim gear, winter dress… now @ 10:00 AM

NOAA upgraded their Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Advisory.   Try to get your track workout in today, if you can.  If not today, you could try to get it in after 11/12 when the temps will be above freezing but the rain will still be falling…helping to melt everything pretty fast.  Just be super careful and test your surface before starting hard work.  That means – take 1 or 2 very slow and cautious laps of the track before you try to get into things.

  1. No Team Track Workout on Saturday
  2. The Q&A will start at my house at 10AM. The subjects for the Q&A are:  “how/where to buy a bike, what drives cost and how do I set a budget”, “where and what to buy in terms of swimming gear, and which pools are best for me to get my sea legs”, and finally “what should I wear when riding or running outside.  What can I get away with NOT buying, and what is essential?”
  3. The Bike Maintenance Clinic will remain at an 11:15 start at my house. The only things you should bring are your front wheel, your pump, and your saddle bag (and only if you have them already – don’t go buy them today until you hear us discuss them).

Continue reading No track tomorrow – Q&A on buying bikes, swim & swim gear, winter dress… now @ 10:00 AM
