The Swim Equipment Clinic this weekend is being held at The Sport Fair in Falls Church.   Please come if you would like advice/help picking out training suits, goggles, caps, or other swim related gear issues!   Sport Fair is a stand-alone building on Lee Highway.   If you are coming from DC the building will be on your left as you approach George Mason Blvd.   If you are coming from the Falls Church area the building will be on your right.   It has an aqua blue awning and parking can be tight so again leave a few extra minutes in case you need to find street parking.   There is a 7 eleven right next door in case you need another landmark to look for.

Saturday Bike Fit and Selection Clinic ”“ 2:00 PM ”“ American University, NW WDC

We will find a comfortable spot ”“ if it’s nice out we will be outside. Please be on time if at all possible so we can get organized. Ryan will be posted at the main door of the fitness center for stragglers. Or call / text ”“ Ryan’s cell is (703) 597-2447.

The bike fit and Selection Clinic is a lecture based session.   Please come dressed as you are and bring a piece of paper or pen IF you want to take notes!   At this clinic we will talk about the differences in bikes (Tri vs. Road) including how they are designed, what they are designed for, and which type you might want to buy.   We’ll talk about what drives cost in terms of frame material and components, and about what you should expect for a given budget.     We’ll introduce you to other factors such as women’s specific geometry, the importance of proper fit, as well as fit related pain and issues you should be aware of.   We’ll address shoes, pedals, where to buy and where not to buy.   We’ll give you our opinions on the local shops and the staff that work there.   This is a great clinic for everyone (even if you have a bike already), especially if you have never been taught about bikes, how to buy them, or what you should expect from customer service when in DC area bike store.

Saturday swim technique clinic ”“ 3:00 PM ”“ New Z’s Only ”“ American University, NW WDC

THIS IS FOR NEW Z’S STARTING THIS WEEKEND ONLY.

Just like the bike fit and selection clinic, we will find a comfortable spot (same spot) for the dryland portion of the swim technique clinic (3p-4p). If it’s nice out we will sit outside. Please be on time if at all possible so we can get organized. Ed or Ryan will be posted at the main door of the fitness center for stragglers. Or call / text ”“ Ryan’s cell is (703) 597-2447.

After the dry land discussion (3-4), we will allow you enough time to go into the locker rooms and get changed for the swim portion of the clinic. There is no need to be in your suit when you come at 3 for the dryland portion – just be comfortable. We will have time to change, and the facilities are nice.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE IT IS STILL WORTH COMING!   The first hour we will be talking on dry land.   We’ll talk about the logistics of training with Team Z swim practices and what to expect when you come to our pools.   We’ll teach you the swimming lingo and how we communicate in the pool.   We’ll teach you how to read a swim workout, and how to actually use it if you are a new swimmer, or unable to swim 3,000 yards in one hour (most of us can’t!).   We’ll introduce you to the pool and how we manage it with groups (etiquette, communication, etc).   We’ll answer any questions you have and then we’ll move into the pool for basic swim form and technique.   All levels are welcome ”“ but if you swam competitively in high school or college you WILL be bored!   This is a BEGINNER FRIENDLY CLINIC. We’ll split the group by ability so there is NO REASON FOR ANYONE to be nervous and think that you might not be good enough!   We want you there, even if swimming 2 or 4 laps is difficult for you.   You can’t learn if you don’t come.   We can’t help you if we don’t see you!   PLEASE put any reservations you may have aside ”“ and make your way there!

Read the directions below carefully ”“ American can feel like a bit of a maze if you’ve never been there. Give yourself plenty of time to get through the city!

Sunday group ride ”“ Time Trial ”“ 8:00 AM ”“ Prince William Forest, Triangle, VA

Previous time trial results can be found in our yahoo group under the “race info” folder. Link to results: http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/TeamZ/files/Race%20Info/Time%20Trials

New Z’s this is a GREAT way to start your Team Z career. Even if you just had your kickoff this weekend! The time trial is a little hilly but very logistically easy with almost no traffic, so it’s a great way to get your feet wet with a team ride. And since it’s a loop you can stop early if you want! If you are new come a little early and let us know that you need some help, we will walk you through everything.

Newest Z’s ”“ again, we’d love love love to have you. If you are comfortable on your bike, please come! And by comfortable I do NOT mean fast. I mean not super nervous. If you are uncomfortable or brand new to riding, it would probably be a better idea to wait until a weekday ride or clinic to get your feet wet. It’s easier to give nervous folks the attention they need in that setting than weekend rides.

If you are injured or otherwise out of commission and would be willing to help with timing, please shoot me an e-mail offline. Thank you!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS”¦
1 – Bring your race belt. We will have fancy numbers. If you don’t know what a race belt is, no worries. We will have safety pins.
2 – Pay us $5 at registration. Or show us your season pass. That will cover your parking.
3 – Everybody, everybody, comes to a complete stop at the stop sign.

Please arrive around 7-7:30. No exceptions. In the past folks have been casual about arrival times. Not cool, please arrive by 7:30 so we can be ready to rock and start our ride to the loop by 8:00. We start time trials on time, don’t be left behind.

What is a PWF time trial? Another team Z tradition! And another one that levels the playing field. This group ride will again be a time trial format at Prince William Forrest.  You DO NOT have to be fast. We will time you, but we do so to provide you with a baseline for comparison to future time trials. We will provide you with your overall time, time for each loop, and variance between loop times. If you’ve never done this before, don’t picture the Tour de France style time trials. Well, actually, it IS kind of formatted that way”¦ but it’s not a valid comparison because YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FAST TO DO OUR TIME TRIAL!

**NEW Zs, NERVOUS RIDERS** Two seven mile loops. At the very least one. You CAN do this. Seriously ”“ we regularly have 20% of people only do one loop!   You can ride easy, OR hard. YOUR CHOICE.   The point is to set a baseline and get a time – then watch yourself improve month to month and year to year. The ride TO the start is actually the hardest part of the day, don’t psych yourself out during our warm up ride.

Leader: Coach Speedy (Alexis)
Help (timing and registration): Joy, Daryl
Where:   Prince William Forrest Park, Triangle, VA
Cue Sheet: Not necessary. It’s a loop. We will explain the course when you arrive.

Directions:   Take I-95 South (32 miles south of Washington, D.C.). Enter Triangle, Virginia near the Quantico Marine Base. Take rte 619 West(exit 150).   The park entrance is less than 1/4 mile on the right hand side of route 619 west. Follow signs to the visitor center.   DRIVE PAST the visitor center and down telegraph road.   The parking area is another .25 miles down the little hill – at the very end (Look at the google map please)

Where NOT to park: Please do not go right to the top of the hill to the start of the time trial loop.

Parking: LOOK AT THE GOOGLE MAP! We will park in the lot at the END of Telegraph Road, PAST the Visitors Center.   When you enter the park, you will go through the entrance gate/building.   There will be nobody there.   Drive STRAIGHT until you see a round about with the visitor center.   The visitor center is noted on the map. Just to the right of the visitor center is a road that continues straight.   There is a gate there that should be unlocked by 8:00 AM.   Drive STRAIGHT down this road for .25-.5 miles to the pavilion/grass field at the bottom.   Park there.   The parking area is noted on the map. LOOK AT IT PLEASE.   Each car that comes to the park must pay $5 — it’s to help support the park, and it’s important that we do it.   However, the Visitors Center (where you pay) will not open until 9:00 (after we’ve rolled out), so please make sure you pay the $5 before you leave.   CARPOOL!
