Introduction to Relays

As we approach race season you will begin to posts that organize relays.  Normally these posts will come from myself or from Jennifer, the Relay Coordinator.

Our team puts  together a TON of relays every year, for any race that allows them.  The relays are great for many reasons. Obviously if you are new to the sport and want to build confidence in one leg or  another before you attempt a “full” tri on your own – this is a great way to get involved by volunteering to do the leg (or  legs – you can do two) that you are comfortable with.

It is also a great way for people that are injured to be able to  compete and have fun (example – can’t run, but can ride or swim).

Finally, many of our event weekends are relatively cheap and take place over two days. Some people will do both races on  both days – but other people may find that crazy!

Having said that, doing a relay for fun on one day and racing the other is probably the  biggest reason our relays are put together.  Are you an ex swimmer? Maybe do the International on Saturday by yourself and volunteer to do the swim for a new Zr  on Sunday at the sprint. You get the point. When I send an email asking about relays – just respond if interested.

Introduction to our Relay Coordinator

We have arguably best Team Z relay coordinator in the history of relay coordinators. Here name is Jennifer “Funky Cold” Medina and she is the Queen of Team Z Relays! Jennifer is royalty and you must bow when in her presence.
Here is her message to the team, more on how to get involved in a relay:

Believe it or not, race season is right around the corner and that means it’s time to talk RELAYS!!! I’m going to be managing team relays this year, so please help me beat Ed  by getting more relay teams formed this year than any other year!

  • Why are relay teams so awesome? Because everyone gets a chance to participate regardless of ability!
  • Got a running injury that’s keeping you from signing up for a full triathlon? No problem! Email me and I’ll find you a runner.
  • Are you nervous about an open water swim? We’ve got you covered! Email me and I’ll find you a swimmer.
  • Sick of lugging your bike to events?  Email me and I’ll find a biker for you!

Seriously, guys, there’s no excuse not to do a relay! It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you think you are, relays are just about having a good time! It’s a great way to get to know other members of the team, save some money on a race entry and contribute to the amazing race day environment that we’ve all come to love about Team Z.

So, let’s get going! Send me your info and I’ll get you connected!

How to contact the Relay Coordinator and get signed up with a relay team

Ready to join a relay? Please email Jennifer:

  • Your name
  • The name of the race you want to participate in (specify Sprint, International, Half, etc)
  • Which leg of the relay you want to do (i.e., swim, bike or run – or some combination of the three – it’s totally okay to do just one or two of the legs)
  • Your cell phone number
  • The email you would like us to use to contact you regarding the relay coordination

***If you’re looking to be part of a competitive relay team, please specify that in your email. Otherwise, I don’t need to know how fast or slow you think you are! Your relay mates won’t care! Like you, they’ll just be excited to participate!

I’ll assemble the relay teams and once I have a completed team, I’ll send out instructions on what your team needs to do next. I will also send out messages looking for folks to help complete relay teams so please check your emails for updates.

Please note the following: Once a team is formed, it is up to you to decide who is going to register and pay and how you’re splitting the registration fee.

I am merely the organizer of the relays. Once you have a team together, you need to communicate among yourselves, exchange phone numbers, get shirt sizes, team name etc. I will answer any questions you have but once you have a team in place, I’m out of the loop unless you need help or have questions.

If you volunteer to be on a relay, you are responsible for your share of the entry fee.  If you do not race – you still must pay for your share OR find/work with Jennifer to find you a replacement.  If no replacement is found…please take care of your obligation.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! I did a relay last year and it was one of my most fun races! I even made it to the podium thanks to my rock star running partner! I really hope we can turn out a ton of Team Z relays this year, guys!
