Saturday Group Ride ”“ 9:00 AM ”“ Monocacy Middle School ”“ Frederick, MD

For a while now the Coaches have wanted to broaden the range of cycling routes the Team has at its disposal. This won’t mean much to you new Zers yet, but most of our vets have been riding our existing routes since Moses was in pull-ups. So this weekend we’re pleased to bring you a brand new ride out of one of our traditional starting locations, Monocacy Middle School in Frederick, a ride we’re calling “Up and Over.” The three longest options take in some truly beautiful terrain up around Catoctin mountain and feature lots of gradual climbing and one of the most exhilarating descents in the area. For those who want a serious challenge, each of the longer routes includes the option to tackle the infamous Harp Hill. But if you are new to the team, rest assured; we also have two shorter routes, both also very scenic and peaceful. And for you vets who are only now, ahem, coming out of hibernation and want to get a few miles in, these shorter routes reverse some of the usual Monocacy routes, and throw in a couple of new roads as well.

For this ride, in addition to the cue-sheets which are located in the “This Weekend” folder on the Team Z Member website, you will also find “Ride Notes” a document that includes more detailed information about training goals, rest stops, safety heads-ups, and terrain that will help you decide which ride option to take. GPS files are also available for those with compatible cycle computers.

We have the following distance options available (the “H” designates a route with the Harp Hill climb, which is described in more detail in the Ride Notes): 70, 68H, 61, 59H, 52, 50H, 28, and 15.

All routes above 50 share the same route over Catoctin and feature a substantial amount of climbing.  Therefore only our strongest riders should contemplate the 70. For those of you training for IMLP the 60 would be ideal because it will give you a lot of practice at the kind steady climbing you will encounter on the course. And for those of you signed up for Mountains of Misery, Harp should definitely be on your agenda, for the reasons described in the ride notes).

Sunday Running Technique Clinic ”“ 8:30 AM ”“ Potomac River Running ”“ Arlington, VA

This clinic is taught by Pro Triathlete and Potomac River Running Store Owner, Margie Shapiro.  The clinic will begin with an overview of gait analysis and proper shoe selection.  It will then move into a high level introduction of running form, most common mistakes made by runners, and how to fix those mistakes.  The goal is to introduce you to the basic concepts of proper running form to aid in prevention of running related injuries.  The lecture will cover all of the main topics and tools that can be used to improve your running technique, and then we’ll move outside for a session to have you practice some running drills.  People will be asked to participate as examples and we’ll correct running form as needed, so wear your athletic gear and expect to be “active”, though we are not going for a “group run” during the clinic.  This is a fantastic clinic and is for EVERYONE!
